I can really feel how much you care for your friend! He sounds like a really lovely man and I do hope that one day he decides to write a memoir. (Love that pic of you with him, Alice Munro, and my old buddy, Mark!)
I was lucky enough to see Doug Gibson promoting Stories About Storytellers at the Sunshine Coast Writers Festival. I had not heard that kind of conversational storytelling for a long time, and I was completely hooked. You know that thing where you name the people you would love to have around your dinner table: Lo! Doug Gibson's name leads all the rest!
The one and only time I met Doug Gibson was when he and you were both at the Sleeping Giant Writer's Festival way back when... I didn't get to spend much time directly with him except for in his workshop, but I was certainly aware of his presence. (How could you not be?) He seemed to be the embodiment of how I imagined Fitzgerald and Hemingway editor Max Perkins: generous, caring, and unflinchingly honest.
Great bio of him, Terry! I agree, someone should write that book!
This is so good! I remember Doug at the Elora Writers Festival in 2016, gracious with the committee (he gave us some helpful advice about authors being asked to sit on stage the whole time rather than in the front row, where it was better for them to catch their breath and prepare for their reading without all eyes on them!), wonderful with the audience (including one-on-one during book signing), and so entertaining as a presenter. I have a photo of Doug signing a book for a fan and you're in the background, looking on with a smile. We were ALL smiling! You've really captured him in this piece. Thank you!

Thank you, Terry, for sharing your memories and paying tribute to Doug. He is a Canadian legend. I've love to read his biography!
Thank you for enlightening me on Doug's work and life, Terry. I'll have to check out some of his books.

He's definitely an important figure in the history of Canadian book publishing.
Thank you for shining a light on Douglas Gibson. I look forward to hearing him speak at the London Writers Society in May.
