Terry, this is a beautiful tribute to Paul. It brings back great memories of him and of our journey to remember and honour him. What a wonderful writer and friend you are.

Nice homage Terry! I saw the Porkbelly Futures w Paul in Wakefield at the Blacksheep In. in the oughts and it was a hoot - bought cigar box banjo shortly afterwards but only now - with your post - will remember to pick up some of his other stuff. Thank you.

Great story! Had the pleasure of meeting Paul in our tiny hamlet of Dunedin when he did a reading. Had admired his writing for years and have to admit that I was a bit awestruck. He was very gracious and we had a great conversation.

Oddly enough, another participant in your adventure is a 'neighbour'. Dan lives not too far away and I run into him occasionally.

What a wonderful story. Here's something you and Paul share: you both read at the small but mighty Elora Writers Festival (Paul in 2004, you - well, SEVERAL times!) This is a beautiful remembrance of an important member of the Canadian literary scene. Got a bit teary...!

Paul Quarrington was one of my favourites as well, probably from about the same time. King Leary and Whale Music are my two favourites, though I have a soft spot for The Life of Hope as well.

What an amazing trip that must have been! I also love the irony of going out on the road to meet a reclusive writer who wrote a book about going out on the road to meet a reclusive writer. And, no less, prompted at least in part by one of Canada's most approachable writers, as Quarrington was.

I had the great joy of meeting him when he was in Thunder Bay (1999, I think?) and was invited to play Euchre with him. I declined for several reasons including the fact that he had been "on" all evening -- I thought he might like some downtime talking with his longtime friends. I don't regret the decision for that reason, but I sorely wish I could have taken him up on the raincheck at some point...

Gone too soon.

A lovely tribute to him, Terry.

What a fun account of your writing adventures. I enjoyed your group reading in Yale that day. Said hello to Joe from Humber. Kinsella is missed around here, by the other Scrabble players at the library too.

Shared a bus ride with Paul to a Writers' Union post AGM dance and exchanged annecdotes about how embarrassing it was when our dogs attacked other animals. Paul's pet tore another's ear. A topper story. Through an accidental hunting magazine subscription (some kind of school fundraiser) I became hooked on his fishing stories. Must read his earlier work now.
